Fairfield, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's soccer team rallied for a 1-1 double overtime tie this evening on Lessing Field, against St. John's University. The Stags improve to 0-2-2 on the year, while the Red Storm are now 2-0-1.

With the Red Storm leading 1-0 at the intermission, the second half was a back and forth affair with both teams having scoring opportunities.

In the 79th minute Amanda Vargo (Orange, Conn.) lifted a ball from the Stags defense third to 45 yards from the Red Storm crease. Rookie Casey Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) collected the ball and drove to the box. As she entered the 18-yard box a Red Storm defender and the Red Storm goalkeeper converged on her, and she chipped the ball over the left shoulder of the keeper into the net, to tie the game at 1-1.

The goal by Fairfield was the first allowed by St. John's in three games this season, a total of 258:28.

Brett Maron turned away St. John's best chance at retaking the lead in the 82nd minute. The Red Storm got a corner kick to the head of Susan Byrne (Dublin, Ireland), which she directed to the far post. Maron left her feet, dove toward the post, and corralled the ball, holding on even after landing on the grass. In the 93rd minute the Red Storm's Kaitlin Hass (Lanhorne, Pa.) struck a ball across the crease that rolled wide of the far post by less then two feet.

St. John's scored its goal at 37:07, when Vaila Barsley (Great Yarmouth, England) took a cross from the opposite side from Brittany Cavarra (Litteton, Colo.) and drove it back across the crease, past a diving Maron.

Maron, who was named the MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week prior to the game, lived up to the award, with eight saves. Her Red Storm counterpart, Jaime Beron (Tuscon, Ariz.) recorded five saves.

The Stags had chances as well. Ahna Johnson (Cheshire, Conn.) received a corner on her right foot and put the ball into the crease in the first half. Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.) took a free kick in the 60th minute that Beran deflected and then corralled. Chrissie Sidie (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) hit the near post in the 71st minute, as well as the Stags being called for five offsides.

The Red Storm out shot the Stags 13-8 in the game. St. John's controlled the ball in the first half; with an 8-2 shot advantage, but the Stags out shot the visitor 6-5 the rest of the way.

Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, September 12, when it hosts Boston University.
