West Point, N.Y. - The Fairfield University women's soccer team defeated host Army 2-1 in the final game of the BAE Systems Classic, to earn the tournament crown. The win improves the Stags record to 2-3-2 on the year, while the Black Knights fall to 4-4-0.

The Stags struck with a pair of first half goals, both great offensive efforts. Laura Mrowka fed a short pass to Whitney Gorovitz on the far side of the box. She put a line drive into the middle of the box that Ahna Johnson dove towards, got her head on, and put it into the back of the net at 10:27.

The Stags second goal, at 36:51 was a solid individual effort from Chrissie Sidie. Sidie collected the ball 30 yards from the net and put it into the upper corner, well out of reach of the Army goalkeeper.

Brett Maron minded the net for the Stags, making three saves, including a leaping punch out in the final minutes of the first half to keep the score at 2-0 into the intermission.

Army out shot Fairfield in the game 18-9, including a barrage of 12 shots in the second half alone. The Black Knights finally broke through with 5:39 to play in regulation on a goal from Ronee Farrell. A minute later Sarah Goss nearly tied it with a long shot from the sideline that went wide.

Fairfield had four players named to the All-Tournament Team, led by Tournament MVP Ahna Johnson. Also on the squad from the Stags were MT Church, Casey Frobey, and Alex Caram

The Stags were out fouled 13-9 in the game, and had three offsides, to the Black Knights one. Each team recorded three corner kicks in the contest.

Fairfield returns to action on Friday, September 22, when it begins the defense of its 2005 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The Stags open league play at Iona, with a 3 p.m. start.
