The Fairfield University women's soccer team earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the year on Sunday, defeating host Marist College, 3-1. The Stags improve to 4-3-4 overall on the year and 1-0-2 in conference play, while the Red Foxes drop to 2-8 on the year and 0-2 in league action.
The Stags scored all they would need in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead on the Red Foxes. Ahna Johnson scored first, with assists' from rookies Casey Frobey and Chrissie Sidie. That goal, at 13:59, gave the Stags a 1-0 lead.
Frobey would also assist on the eventual game winner, at the 40:27 mark of the first half. Frobey put a pass behind the Red Foxes defenders to the foot of Alex Caram who slid the ball past the Marist goalkeeper. Frobey would add an insurance goal in the second half as well. She took a pass from Robyn Decker at 62:28 and chipped it over the keepers head, for a 3-0 lead.
Marist would score its goal at 87:11 on Melanie Ondrejik's second goal of the season, putting the ball into the top corner of the net.
Brett Maron picked up the win for the Stags, minding the net for the entire 90 minutes of play. She allowed just the one goal, while making three saves. Caitlin Nazarechuk made six saves for the Red Foxes, but allowed three goals, in 90 minutes.
Fairfield outshot its conference foe 14-9, including 9-2 in the first half of play. The Red Foxes had more corners, 7-3, with a 5-0 advantage in the second half, and Fairfield had 15 fouls to the hosts 14.
The Stags will return to action on Wednesday, October 4, when they travel to New Haven, Conn., to take on Yale University. That match is scheduled for 5 p.m. and is the first game of a women's-men's Fairfield versus Yale double-header.
