Fairfield, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's soccer team returned to its winning ways Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over non-conference foe Holy Cross at Lessing Field. The win improves the Stags to 5-4-4 on the year, while the Crusaders drop to 2-11-2.
MT Church (Centennial, Colo.) scored the game-winning goal just 5:21 into the game, knocking home a penalty kick. Casey Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) created the scoring chance, stealing an outlet pass, dribbling past the keeper in the box, before getting pulled down.
The Stags scored again as the half was winding to an end. Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.) took a pass on the far side of the box from Ahna Johnson (Hamden, Conn.) and slid it back to the near post, for a 2-0 lead with 3:55 to play in the period. That would be the intermission score, though the Stags, who took 13 first half shots, could have had more, hitting the cross bar three times and the post once, in the first half.
Frobey provided the Stags offense in the second half, scoring two goals, giving her a team-best eight for the season. The first goal, at 77:58, came from a Laura Mrowka (Branford, Conn.) pass. Frobey's second goal came at 82:15, as Caram chipped a ball over the Holy Cross defenders, right onto her foot, and Frobey flicked it home to the near post.
Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.) earned her fourth shutout of the season, making three saves. The shutout is the 14th of her career, half a shutout shy of third place all-time in Stags history.
Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) allowed the first goal, and left after just 10:24 of action, for the Crusaders. Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) played the final 79:36, allowing three goals, but making seven saves.
Fairfield out shot Holy Cross 22-6 for the game, and had five corner kicks, to the Crusaders three. In a cleanly played game, there were only five total fouls, three on the Crusaders.
The Stags are back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m., hosting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Manhattan, on Lessing Field.
