The Fairfield University women's soccer team earned its second consecutive shutout, defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Manhattan College 5-0 this evening on Lessing Field. The Stags improve to 6-4-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the league, while the Jaspers drop to 9-5-1 on the year and 1-3-1 in conference action.
Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.) made two keys saves in the first 15 minutes of action, which the Jaspers controlled. She dove to her left and snagged a ball airborne for one save, and snagged another drilled two-feet above her head towards the cross bar. The two saves kept the game scoreless, and the Stags offense took over.
Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.) started the scoring, collecting a rebound from a Chrissie Sidie (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) shot, and putting it in the back of the net, at 33:20. Ahna Johnson (Hamden, Conn.) netted an insurance goal just over four minutes later, heading in a free kick from the foot of MT Church (Centennial, Colo.)
The Stags offense continued to produce in the second half, as rookie Casey Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) joined the action. Her first goal, at 58:34 came as Caram chipped the ball over the defense to Frobey's foot. Her second goal, at 67:16, was unassisted, as she dribbled through the backline and beat the keeper far side. Laura Mrowka (Branford, Conn.) wrapped up the Stags scoring at 84:35, depositing a pass from Amanda Vargo (Orange, Conn.)
The shutout for Maron was her fifth of the year, and 15th of her career, good for third all-time, passing Dana Comuniello (1998-2001). Alicia DeFino (Mineola, N.Y.) took the loss in goal, playing the first half, allowing two goals and making four saves. Caitlin Trupiano (Massapequa, N.Y.) allowed three second half goals, with one save, for the Jaspers.
Frobey leads the team with 10 goals, which is good for 10th on the Stags single-season goal scoring list, tied with five other players, most recently Meghan King in 2001. One more goal moves her into a sixth place tie, a second goal into third. The single season record is held by Abby Allan, 22 in 1997, and her 18 in 1998, ranks second.
The Stags out shot the Jaspers 20-7, but had fewer corner kick opportunities, 5-3. Fairfield committed 10 fouls to seven of Manhattan.
The Stags return to action on Sunday, October 15, when they host MAAC rival Saint Peter's at 1 p.m. on Lessing Field.
