The Fairfield University women's soccer team clinched a spot in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Soccer Championship, with a 2-0 win over league rival Canisius College at Lessing Field Friday night. The win improves the Stags to 9-5-4 overall and 5-1-2 in the league, while the Griffs drop to 5-12-1 on the year and 2-5-1 in MAAC action.
Fairfield senior Laura Mrowka (Branford, Conn.) scored both of the Fairfield goals, both in the second half of play. The first goal, at 49:14, came from the foot of Casey Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) who played the ball from the near side across to the back post, where Mrowka put a foot on it and beat the keeper.
The second goal, at 63:22 was similar, this time off the foot of Alex Caram (Lexington, Mass.). Caram played the ball from outside the box on the near side, into the eight on the far post. Mrowka ran on from 25-yards out, and knocked the ball home.
Brett Maron (Billerica, Mass.) posted her seventh shutout of the season, with a three save effort on the night. Her Canisius counterpart made 13 saves, while allowing a pair of goals.
The Stags out shot their visitor 23-6 in the game, including a 15-2 barrage in the first half. Fairfield had a 6-3 edge in corner kick chances, and both teams committed 11 fouls. The Stags were called offsides eight times in the win.
Fairfield looks to lock up the second-seed in the November 3-5 MAAC Tournament, which they host, on Sunday, when Niagara visits Lessing Field. The two teams met in the 2005 MAAC Championship Game, which the Stags won 2-1.
The four teams are set for the tournament, with Loyola having the top-seed locked up. A Fairfield win on Sunday gives the Stags the number two seed, Siena the three seed and Niagara the fourth seed, based on the Saints 4-3 win over the Purple Eagles. A Stag loss will give Niagara the second seed, Fairfield the third and Siena the fourth.
Game time against Niagara is set for noon, with a pregame ceremony to honor the Fairfield senior class.
