The Fairfield University soccer team hosts Manhattan College Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saint Peter's College, Sunday at 1 p.m., in a push for qualification to the MAAC Tournament. The Stags are currently in fourth place with 5 points, one point ahead of Manhattan, Iona and Canisius, and just two points ahead of Rider and Marist.
The Jaspers will host Iona on Sunday, while Rider is at Marist Firday night and at Siena on Sunday. Marist will host Loyola, second with nine points, on Sunday. Niagara, second with nine points, hosts Canisius tongiht as well, while the Peahens are at Iona. The Saints are in first place at 3-0-1, with 10 points.
On Sunday, the Stags will be hosting several events surrounding the 15th anniversary of women's soccer. Prior to the game, at approximatly 12:50, the Stags Hall of Fame inductees will be honored. At halftime, all returning alumni will be introduced to the crowd. Tonight's Match-up ... The race to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament begins in earnest tonight, as the Stags take on Manhattan College. Fairfield enters the game at 5-4-4 overall and in fourth place in the MAAC at 1-0-2, four points. The Jaspers are 9-4-1 on the year.
A 15th Anniversary Celebration ... The 2006 campaign marks the 15th season of women's soccer as a varsity sport at Fairfield. Prior to Sunday's game with Saint Peter's, the Stags will honor members of the program which have been inducted into the school's hall of fame. At halftime, members of the program who return for the contest, will be recognized.
Westport Soccer Club Night ... The Fairfield University women's soccer team welcomes three teams from the Westport Soccer Club to this evening's. In attendance tonight are the U-9 Westport Red, the U-10 Westport Wolves, and the U-11 Westport Wave.
Last Time Out ... The Stags were clicking Tuesday night, earning a 4-0 win over Holy Cross. Casey Frobey continued her solid play with two goals, while Alex Caram had a goal and an assist. MT Church scored the game-winner on a penalty kick, and Brett Maron notched her fourth shutout of the season.
Maron Moves Up Brett Maron within half a shutout of third place all-time on Tuesday night. Her 14 shutouts is just shy of the 14.5 Dana Comuniello notched from 1998-2001.
What Lies Ahead for the Stags ... The Stags will host Saint Peter's on Sunday at 1 p.m., as they honor their Hall of Fame members and members of the 15 years of program excellence. The team will then take to the road next weekend, Friday at Loyola and Sunday at Rider, before closing out the regular season at home with a Friday night game against Canisius and a Sunday afternoon game against Niagara, the last weekend of October. The 1998 team went 18-2, 9-0 in the MAAC, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In the process the squad set records for goals (74), points (199), shutouts (11), winning percentage (90.0%), fewest losses (2), and an unbeaten streak of 15,Abby Allen became the Stags first All-American and was the MAAC Player of the Year. The Stags barely fell to Maryland, 4-3, in the NCAA's.
