Apr 12, 2008
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Fairfield University softball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end as the Stags dropped a doubleheader to Canisius College on the road. The Griffs swept the twinbill by 13-5 in six innings and 11-4 in the nightcap. The losses also represented Fairfield's first in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
The day started well for the Stags as they tallied three runs in the top of the first inning of game one. Kristis Trifiolis started the rally with a walk, and took second base after a base hit by Riannon Thomas. Both runners came home when clean-up hitter Kristina Lingo launched a three-run homer to right-center field for a 3-0 lead. The Griffs tied the game in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run. Canisius tallied two runs or more in each of the next four innings to put the game out of reach.
The roles reversed in the night cap as Canisius used the long ball to take the lead in the first inning, a two-run homer that made the score 2-0 after an inning of play. Fairfield tied the scored in the top of the second as Breanne Morschauser and Jessica Stand each had a single in the rally.
The Golden Griffs regained the lead with a single run in the second inning, and added eight more runs over the next four innings to take command of the game. Fairfield added two more runs in the game as Riannon Thomas launched a two-run home run in the fifth inning, the first of two extra base hits for the third baseman.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it finishes up the two-day road swing through upstate New York with a doubleheader against Niagara University. The first pitch is slated for 11 am.
