Apr 17, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Jenna DiBernardo hit two doubles, a home run, and drove home three runs as the Fairfield University softball team defeated the University of Hartford by an 8-0 count in five innings. Pitcher Kelli Panter tossed her first shutout of the season by scattering three hits in the five-inning game.

The Stags scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, three of which were unearned. DiBernardo sent home the first run of the game with a double to left center field, sending home Kristie Trifiolis. Trifiolis started the rally with a one-out single through the left side. Meghan Borst was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs. Both runners came home when a fly ball to right field was misplayed, making the score 3-0. The fourth run crossed the plate after Erin Frank hit a double off the left field fence.

The Stags tacked on a run in the third inning when DiBernardo and Borst hit back-to-back doubles down the left field line. The score went to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of  DiBernardo's home run over the left field wall. The game ended when Kelly Waldron's pinch-single skipped past an outfielder, which allowed Lisa Meringer to score from first base.

Panter fanned eight hitters in eight innings to pick up her seventh win of the season. Amanda Dilworth, Amanda Sais, and Kristen Cericola each hit a single for Hartford.
