Stags Split Season Opening Games With Win Over Detroit Mercy, Loss To Lehigh

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Meghan Borst scored a run in the first game and drove home another run in the nightcap as the Stags opened the 2008 season with a doubleheader at the Rebel Games in Orlando. Fairfield won the opener by a 2-1 score against Detroit-Mercy, but fell to Lehigh by a 9-1 count in the second game.

In the opener, Borst scored the game's first run when Borst led off the second inning with a double. She went to third base when Breanne Morschauser sacrificed Borst to third, and came home off Riannon Thomas' RBI single. Fairfield made the score 2-0 with another run in the fourth inning. Erin Frank started the inning with a single and took second when Borst bunted her to second base. Morschauser drove Frank home with a base hit.

Pitcher Kelli Panter tossed a complete game in her Fairfield debut, striking out seven hitters in seven innings. She gave up one run in the game which came home in the sixth frame.

In the second game, Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth inning. Kristina Lingo walked and took second after Julia Jacoby's sacrifice fly. Lingo stole third base which set up Borst's sacrifice fly to left field. Lehigh responded with a five-run fifth inning to make the score 5-1. The Hawks put the game away with four more runs in the seventh inning.
