Borst's Single Ends Marathon Game As Softball Beats Marist In 14 Innings, 6-5
Apr 30, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The game took more than three weeks to finally come with a winner. When it did end this afternoon, the Fairfield University softball team posted a 6-5 victory over Marist College. The contest began on April 6 but was suspended after 12 innings due to darkness with score tied 5-5.
Today, pitcher Sarah Minice finished what she started on April 6 when she pitched two innings this afternoon, giving her nine total innings of work against the Red Foxes. She retired all six hitters she faced this afternoon including a pair of strikeouts.
The Stags threatened in the 13th inning before winning the game in the 14th frame. Jessica Stand went to first in the 13th with a one-out walk and took second on a fielder's choice. She advanced to third following a passed ball, before Riannon Thomas hit a hard grounder for the third out.
In the final inning, Kristina Lingo stroked a one-out double to place a runner in scoring position. After a fly out to center, Meghan Borst pushed a base hit through the right side of the infield to score Lingo with the deciding run.
The run completed an impressive come back for the Stags, who trailed in the game by a 5-0 score after two innings. However, Fairfield posted three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to tie the score at 5-5. The two teams played seven consecutive scoreless innings from that point until Borst's RBI single ended the contest.
Fairfield finishes up the regular season with a doubleheader against Iona College on May 3. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
