Apr 6, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team remainded unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a 2-1 win over Marist College in the first game of a doubleheader. The nightcap was suspended after 12 innings due to darkness with the score tied at 5-5.
In the opener, Fairfield jumped out to a two-run lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs on the board, Julie Jacoby singled with a bunt to the left side of the infield. Riannon Thomas followed with a home run that cleared the left field fence, giving the Stags a 2-0 lead. The Red Foxes could not crack through against pitcher Sarah Minice until the top of the seventh inning.
A misplayed fly ball to right field turned into a triple for Katelyn Molloy, putting a runner on third base. She came home when Lindsey Kinel was thrown out trying to steal second. Minice fanned Mary Beth Pomes to end the game and give the rookie her third win of the week.
In the second game, Marist jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Stags rallied to tie the game with three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 5-5. Minice pitched the final seven innings of the nightcap without allowing a run, scattering four hits and striking out four in her relief appearance.
The Stags return to action on April 9 when they host Central Connecticut State University. Game time is slated for 3 pm. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Central Connecticut, but will now be played in Fairfield.
