Mar 27, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Providence College, but rallied to tie the nightcap at 3-3 before the contest was halted due to darkness. Kristie Trifiolis stroked a two-run single in the second game which knotted the score.

In the second game, Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Katelyn Revens scored on a mishandled grounder in the top of the first inning. The Stags tied the game in the bottom half of the frame as Julia Jacoby singled, stole second base, and came home Kristina Lingo's triple to right-center field.

The Friars regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Revens scored her second run of the game after Mary Rose Sheehy singled down the right field line. Gina Rossi pushed the score to 3-1 after she singled home Sheehy. The Stags rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, as the team loaded the bases before Trifiolis dropped in a single. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, resulting ina tie.

In the first game, Providence scored all it would need in the top of the second inning when the Friars took advantage of one Fairfield error. The mishap opened the door for four runs as Julie Fowler and Bevens each drove home a run. The Stags had their opportunities to score in the contest, but could not get the big hit to drive home runners. Fairfield left 11 runners on base in the doubleheader opener.

Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 when it travels cross town for a doubleheader against Sacred Heart University.
