
Minice Tosses 15 Scoreless Innings In Softball's Sweep Of Rider

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Pitcher Sarah Minice tossed 15 scoreless innings to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a pair of 1-0 wins over Rider University on Saturday. The freshman fanned nine hitters in the sweep.
In the opener, the Stags scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Breanne Morschauser opened the inning with a single. Lisa Meringer took her place at first base as a pinch runner. Erin Frank sacrificed Meringer to second for the first out. Minice's grounder to third was mishandled to put runners on the corner with one out. Morschauser reentered the game at third base, and scored off Meghan Borst's single.
Minice went the distance in first game, allowing four hits and striking out five batters to earn her 11th win of the season. Despite going seven innings, Minice received the starting nod in the nightcap.
The freshman faced the minimum batters through the first six innings, although Megan Kozlowski stroked a base hit in the fourth inning. However, catcher Erin Frank threw her out trying to steal a base to end the inning.
The Stags finally broke through against pitcher Lauren Brunner in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kristie Trifiolis led off the inning with a base hit to right field. Julia Jacoby placed a sacrifice bunt to send Trifiolis to second base. Riannon Thomas followed with a double to ledt center field to push home the base runner and give the Stags a 1-0 win.
Minice allowed four hits and fanned four batters to earn her 12th victory of the season. Fairfield extended its win streak to five games and has now won 15 of its last 20 games.
