Minice Tosses Second Shutout In Softball Team's 2-0 Win Over Sacred Heart

Apr 16, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman pitcher Sarah Minice tossed her second shutout of the season by fanning 10 Pioneer hitters and scattering four hits as the Fairfield University softball team posted a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart University on the road. The 10 strikeouts represents a career-high, surpassing her nine strikeouts against Providence earlier in the year.

The Stags offense pounded out seven hits and had at least one base runner in five of the seven innings. Fairfield finally broke through in the top of the second when Breanne Morschauser laced a two-out double and took third when the throw was misplayed. Kris D'Alessandro followed with a base hit to score Morschauser, giving the Stags a 1-0 lead.

The team nearly plated another run in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs. Minice singled down the left field line, and Morschauser added a walk to put runners on first and second. D'Alessandro recorded her second hit of the day to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Fairfield added an insurance run in the seventh inning, a rally which started with Julia Jacoby's one-out double to right center field. After a strikeout, Riannon Thomas placed a base hit to right field that scored Jacoby and gave a two-run cushion to the team.

Sacred Heart put together a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning as an error put leadoff batter Betsy Harvey on first base. Back-to-back fielder's choices kept a runner on first base with two outs. Jasmin Vicente finally pushed the runner to second with a base hit, but Jen Russell grounded out to second base for the final out.

Thomas joined D'Alessandro as the only players with two hits in the game.

Fairfield returns to action on Thursday for a single game against the University of Hartford at home. The game time is slated for 3 pm.
