Apr 5, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) portion of its schedule with a sweep of Siena College, winning the first game by a 3-2 score and the nightcap by a 4-1 margin. With the two wins, Head Coach Julie Brzezinski won her 300th career game at Fairfield University.

In the opener, the Stags jumped out to  a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Kristina Lingo started the inning with a walk. She wen to third base after back-to-back singles by Erin Frank and Jenna DiBernardo, loading the bases with one out. Pitcher Sarah Minice lofted a fly ball into foul territory which was tracked down by the second baseman. However, it was deep enough to score Lingo for a 1-0 lead.

Siena took the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs. When a pop up was dropped for what would have been the third out, Siena's Lauren Weingart followed the play with a two-run single to push the visitors in front, 2-1. Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Breanne Morschauser singled home Lingo to make the score 2-2. The Stags won the game in the bottom of the seventh with the rally starting off Lingo's double. She scored the deciding run after Julia Jacoby hit a ball off the right field fence for a double, sending Lingo home for a 3-2 win.

Minice evened up her record for the season at 5-5 by earning her second win of the week. The freshman struck out six hitters, walked one, and scattered eight hits in the seven-inning outing.

In the second game, pitcher Kelli Panter retired the first 11 hitters she faced before giving up a pair of singles in the top of the fourth inning. The Stags provided all the runs she would need in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three times. Riannon Thomas tagged a two-run single to send home the first base runners of the game. Kristie Trifiolis secured third run with a ground out.

Siena cut into the lead with a single run in the sixth inning by scoring off a wild pitch. The Stags regained their three-run edge when Morschauser singled and came home on Meghan Borst's RBI double to left center field.

Panter earned her fifth win of the season by striking out a personal best 11 batters. She yielded six hits and no walks in her seven-inning performance.

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, April 6 when it hosts Marist College in a MAAC doubleheader. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
