Softball Drops Single Game To St. John's On The Road

Mar 25, 2008

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Jenna DiBernardo and Kristie Trifiolis each hit a home run, while Julia Jacoby tallied a pair of hits as the Fairfield University softball team dropped a 10-4 decision to St. John's University on the road.

The Stags started the game quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning. Jacoby started the game with a single, and took second on a ground out. DiBernardo's grounder to shortstop was mishandled which allowed her to take second and Jacoby to score. Trifiolis followed with a two-run homer to left field, pushing the score to 3-0.

St. John's erased that deficit with five runs in the bottom of the second inning, as the Red Storm stroked four hits and took advantage of two Fairfield errors. All five of the runs surrenderd by starting pitcher Kelli Panter were unearned.

The home team tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third, with one of those runs being scored unearned. Panter left the game in the third frame after allowing eight runs, but only two were earned. Jen Gilbert entered the game for the Stags and went on to pitch the next three innings before yielding to Sarah Minice in the seventh.

The Stags scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as DiBernardo unleashed her second homer of the season, hitting the ball down the left field line and over the fence.

Fairfield returns to action on Thursday, March 27 when the team hosts Providence College for a pair of games. First pitch is slated for 2:30 pm.
