Softball Sweeps Rhode Island Behind Four Hits From Thomas

Apr 20, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Riannon Thomas stroked two hits in both ends of a doubleheader as the Fairfield University softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Rhode Island at home. Thomas had a triple and three singles in the two games.

The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, a rally which started with a one-out walk by Julia Jacoby. She came home when Thomas ripped a double to right-center field to make the score 1-0. Thomas scored the second run after Kristina Lingo singled up the middle.

The lead stood until the Rams put their only run on the board, a result of three consecutive singles by Shelly Petersen, Stef Poedubicky, and Leah DiBussolo. However, Fairfield tallied a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a three-run advantage at 4-1. In the fifth frame, Jacoby doubled just inside the right field line, and came home two batters later when Lingo hit an RBI double down the same line. The sixth inning started with Erin Frank's base hit. Jess Stand came into run for Frank, and was promptly sacrificed to second base. Stand stole third base and came home off Meghan Borst's single to right center.

Danielle Iovino pitched the final five innings of the game, in relief of Kelli Panter. Panter tossed the first two innings, but was removed after a ground ball struck her leg in the middle of the second inning. Iovino earned her first collegiate win by scattering five hits and allowing one earned run.

In the nightcap, Rhode Island took an early lead with a run in the first inning courtesy of Melissa Wilson's sacrifice fly which plated Petersen. The Stags answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, starting with Kristie Trifiolis coming home on Thomas' suicide squeeze bunt. Lingo, and Frank also had an RBI in the inning with a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.

Fairfield added two more runs in the third inning after Frank hit a two-out two-run double to right-center field to make the score 5-1. The team would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth with two of the runs scoring on ground outs. Jenna DiBernardo and Lingo were responsible for those two RBI.

After Rhode Island scored a run in the fifth inning, the Stags ended the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Breanne Morschauser's RBI double brought home the final run that stopped the game in the sixth inning at 10-2.

Jen Gilbert earned her first win of the season in relief of starter Sarah Minice. Gilbert went three innings and allowed two hits with one earned run in her fourth appearance this year.

The Stags return to action on Thursday, April 24 when they travel to the University at Stony Brook for a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
