Softball Sweeps Yale University Behind Strong Freshmen Pitching Efforts
Apr 2, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sarah Minice threw a complete-game shutout, while Kelli Panter tossed a complete game in the nightcap as the Fairfield University softball team swept Yale University at home, 8-0 and 2-1.
In the opener, Minice dominated the Bulldogs by allowing just three hits and striking out three batters in six innings of work. The Stags scored in all but the first inning en route to the 8-0 victory, which was called in the bottom of the sixth inning. Erin Frank tallied three hits and drove home two runners in the first game. Seven of Fairfield's starting nine players had at least one hit in the opener. Julia Jacoby, Jenna DiBernardo, and Jessica Stand each had an RBI in the contest.
The Stags opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, the second run coming off a sacrifice fly by Stand. Fairfield pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third inning after Kristina Lingo scored off DiBernardo's base hit up the middle. The score became 4-0 one inning later courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Jacoby. The Stags added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, as Frank laced a two-run double in the final inning to close the scoring.
The next game did not have a good start for Fairfield as a two-out error with the bases loaded pushed Yale in front for the first time all day at 1-0. The Stags had trouble getting the offense going against Kayla Kuretich, who retired the first five hitters she faced. DiBernardo broke up the string with a two-out single in the second inning, which Megan Borst followed up with a single to put runners and first and second.
It was the only time that Fairfield would put more than one runner on base during this game, until the bottom of the sixth. The Stags rallied off reliever Holly Guttereud when Kristie Trifiolis singled followed by back-to-back walks to Lingo and Frank. After a strikeout to put two outs on the board, Borst stroked a two-run single to right field to make the score 2-1.
Panter put runners on second and third in the top of the seventh, but fanned Megan Enyeart to end the game. Panter did not allow an earned run in hier seven innings, and struck out four hitters in the game.
The Stags return to action on Saturday, April 5 when they open the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) portion of their schedule against Siena College. Game time is 1 pm.
