Box Score

Six different players stroked a hit against San Diego State University, but the hits were not enough to overcome four Fairfield University errors that led to six unearned runs in the Aztecs 11-4 win over the Stags on Tuesday night. The game marked the start of an eight-game West Coast trip for the Fairfield softball team.

The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, courtesy of RBI singles from Cagney Ringnalda and Breanne Morschauser. San Diego State rallied for a pair of runs, one of which was unearned. The home team took control of the game with three more runs in the bottom of the second inning, with Melissa Owens providing a double that sent home two runs.

Fairfield worked its way back into the game with a single run in the third inning and another run in the fifth frame. In the third, Kristie Trifiolis led off the inning with a base hit. She came around to score when Dani Griswold's grounder was misplayed, which made the score 5-3. The margin became one run in the fifth inning when Griswold singled and came home following Morschauser's triple.

San Diego State put the game out of reach by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and another three runs in the sixth frame. All the runs came at the expense of starting pitcher Ringnalda, who allowed all 11 runs but only five of those were earned. Jen Gilbert pitched the final inning for Fairfield and did not allow a base runner.
