SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Julia Jacoby recorded three hits and four RBI to help the Fairfield University softball build a 5-0 lead, only to see Fordham University score seven unearned runs to post a 7-5 win at the Aztec Invitational on the campus of San Diego State University.
The Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jacoby singled and later scored on Cagney Ringnalda's base hit. Jacoby bolstered the Fairfield advantage with a two-run single in the second inning, pushing the lead to 3-0. Two inning later, Jacoby came to the plate once again and came through for her teammates. The outfielder drove a pitch to right-center field for a two-run triple that made the score 5-0. The triple scored Kristen D'Allessandro and Kristie Trifiolis, both of whom singled with two outs.
Fordham started its comeback in the top of the fifth inning, placing two runners on base with two outs. After a fielding error by the Stags, the Rams responded with four straight hits and a walk that translated into seven runs and a 7-5 lead. The Stags posted a pair of hits in the sixth inning, but could not send home any base runners. Fairfield also managed a base hit in the seventh, but an game-ending double play ended the Stags hopes.
