STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Cagney Ringnalda collected a win in the first game and hit a three-run homer in the second contest as the Stags softball team posted a split on the first day of Stony Brook Invitational. Fairfield posted a 5-3 win over the host school in the opener, but dropped an 11-3 decision against Long Island University in the second contest.

The Stags started the tourney with a victory, thanks to a pair of hits by junior Julia Jacoby. She delivered the key hit in Fairfield's four-run second inning which broke the game wide open. After falling behind 2-0, Fairfield rallied, with the middle two runs coming off a double by Jacoby. Erin Frank closed the scoring in the inning with a bases loaded walk.

Pitcher Cagney Ringnalda made those runs stand by allowing just one more run over the next couple innings before yielding to Meghan Borst. The freshman picked up a save by pitching the final 2-plus innings, fanning four Stony Brook hitters.

In the second game, Long Island scored runs in each of the first four inning, and built a 9-0 lead before the Stags managed any type of offensive threat. Trailing after three innings, Fairfield cut into the lead when Ringnalda launched a three-run homer to make the score 9-3. Kristen D'Alessandro, who singled, and Frank, who walked, both scored on Ringnalda's blast.

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Quinnipiac University.
