FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Meghan Borst earned a pair of wins in the pitching circle, and hit her first career grand slam in the nightcap to lift the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep of Canisius College, and finish its MAAC weekend with a 3-1 record.
The Stags trailed just once throughout the two games, a brief 1-0 top of the first inning deficit of the second game. The Golden Griffs' Katie Miranto led off the game with a walk and eventually came home off Jenny Maheu's RBI fielder's choice.
Fairfield quickly erased that deficit in the bottom of the inning as the first three Stags reached to load the bases. After a force out at home and a strikeout, Borst came to the plate with a chance to push the team ahead with a hit. But it It turned out to be more of a shove than a push as the rookie connected for a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 4-1. That was all the offensve generated by either team in the game.
Borst earned the win when she came in relief of Cagney Ringnalda, who pitched the first two innings. Borst allowed just four hits in five innings of work with two walks and three strikeouts.
In the first game, Fairfield lost a two-run lead but rallied in the bottom half of the seventh to win a 3-2 decision. The Stags broke out with a single run in the fourth inning when Ringnalda started with a walk. She stole second base, which allowed her to score a couple batters later off Riannon Thomas' single to center field.
The Stags doubled their lead in the fifth frame thanks to Kristen D'Alessandro's lead-off homer to left field. Canisius rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the score at 2-2. In the sixth, Miranto and Ashley Bonetto hit back-to-back doubles for the Griffs first run. One inning later, the game was tied Angela Turrey reached on a misplayed pop up and scored off Brittany Bonetto's double to left-center field.
Fairfield won the game in the bottom of the seventh after Jacoby led off the inning with a double. She was sacrificed to third base by Erin Frank, and came home on Dani Griswold's fielder's choice to the right side of the infield. Borst pichted the last two innings to earn the win.
The Stags return to action on Thursday, April 5 when they host the University of Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:30 pm.
