WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Freshman Meghan Borst hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Fairfield University softball team to a 6-5 extra-inning victory over the University of Hartford. Classmate Kristie Trifiolis added three hits and three RBI in the game, including a solo homer in the top of the first.
The game was moved to West Hartford when field conditions were unplayable in Fairfield. The second game was cancelled due to cold weather and snow showers.
The Stags jumped out to a 3-0 lead, which began with Trifiolis' one-out home run in the first frame. Fairfield added two more runs in the third inning, both coming home on Trifiolis' double to left field.
Hartford made the score 3-1 in the bottom half of the inning as Amanda Sais' infield single sent home the run. Fairfield answered with two more runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run double by Kristen D'Alessandro which plated Breanne Morschauser and Riannon Thomas.
The Hawks worked their way back into the game with three runs in the fifth inning. Nikki Thompson singled home the first run, while Ann Kyzer recorded an RBI double to left-center field to make the score 5-3. Sara Messinger completed the inning with a sacrifice fly which scored Rachel Clonick.
The home team tied the score with a run in the sixth inning, as Amanda Dilworth singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and came home on Thompson's single.
Cagney Ringnalda earned the victory in the pitching circle, yielding just four hits in two-plus innings. The senior improved her record to 6-8 overall. Jen Gilbert and Borst also pitched in the game with Gilbert receiving the starting nod.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, April 7 when it travels to Iona College for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. Game time is slated for noon.
