FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Jen Gilbert tossed a four-hit shutout in the second game of a doublehaeder against Georgetown University, helping the Fairfield University softball complete a sweep of the visiting Hoyas. The Stags scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 3-2 win in the opening game.
The Hoyas jumped to a quick 2-0 lead with a single run in each of the first two innings. Demi Cipriano stared the game with a single and was sacrificed to second and came home on Samantha Peter's double. Cipriano played a role in the second inning slicing an RBI single with two outs to make it a 2-0 game. Georgetown pitcher Jennifer Connell kept the Stags in check, allowing just one run and five hits through the first six innings.
Fairfield put together its winning rally in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with a single by Jessica Stand. Kristen D'Alessandro bunted Stand to second base, setting up Kristie Trifiolis' RBI double that tied the game at 2-2. Trifiolis came home with the winning run off Erin Frank's hard infield single that bounced off the third baseman and rolled toward second base, allowing the rookie to score from second base.
The Stags reversed roles in the second game by scoring a run in the first inning. Julia Jacoby drove a ball to the right field wall for a triple, and came home on a wild pitch. The run proved to be all that Gilbert would need, as she allowed just two hits over the final six innings.
Fairfield put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Stand and D'Alessandro each had an RBI in the inning. Jacoby finished off the scoring with a solo home run to center field.
The Stags return to action on Wednesday when they host St. John's University for a single game. First pitch is slated for 4 pm.
