Game One Box Score Game Two Box Score
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Julia Jacoby tallied seven hits and drove home five runs to help the Fairfield University softball team post a pair of non-conference victories over the University of Rhode Island. The Stags won the opener by a 5-3 score, and followed up with a 7-5 victory in the second contest.
Fairfield took an early lead in the first game, scoring three unearned run in the top of the second inning. The Rams committed three errors in the inning, the second of which allowed Cagney Ringnalda and Dani Griswold to score on a misplayed grounder by the shortstop. Julie Jacoby followed with an RBI triple to complete the scoring and to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Rhode Island cut into that lead with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. Fairfield gained its three-run lead back in the third inning when Riannon Thomas scored on off Griswold's double. Meghan Borst tallied Fairfield's final run in the sixth inning, as the freshman singled and later scored Jacoby's RBI single. Jen Gilbert earned the victory by pitching six innings, before giving way to Borst in the seventh frame. Gilbert fanned five hitters in six innings, and scattered eight hits.
The second game started much like the first with Fairfield scoring three runs in the second inning. Jacoby drove home the first run with a base hit, which Kristie Trifiolis followed with her first RBI single of the day. Jacoby tallied the team's third run when she scored after a Rhode Island error.
Trifiolis registered her second RBI single of the game with a base hit in the fourth inning, which made the score 4-0. After Rhode Island scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Stags answered with two runs in the fifth frame thanks to a two-run double by Jacoby.
Kate Roberts earned her first win of the season by pitching four-plus innings, striking out two batters and walking none. Borst pitched the final two-plus innings to finish out the game.
