BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Erin Frank set a personal high with her 10th home run of the season, but it was not enough to keep the Fairfield University softball team's MAAC win streak alive as Canisius College won both ends of a doubleheader. The Griffs won the opener by a 6-1 count, and came back with a 3-2 win in game two.
It was Frank's home run that provided all of Fairfield's offense in the opening game. Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single run in the first and third innings. The Stags cut that lead in half after Frank's drive cleared the fence and made the score 2-1. The Golden Griffs put up a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take control at 6-1. Cagney Ringnalda took the loss in the pitching circle, but the junior added two of the team's four hits in the game. Riannon Thomas posted the other hit for Fairfield.
In the second game, Canisius jumped out to 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Stags came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Thomas sent home the tying run with a base hit to make the score 1-1. Canisius regained the lead in its half of the inning, but once again the Stags tied the score in the next inning.
Frank led off the top of the sixth with a single, and eventually scored on an error by the third base. Canisius recaptured the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth which proved to be the game-winner. Tara Hansen took the loss, despite allowing just six hits and one walk. She also fanned three hitters.
The Stags finish up the conference portion of their schedule this week when they host Rider University in a make-up doubleheader on Tuesday, May 2. Fairfield closes the regular-season by hosting Siena College on Sunday, May 7.
