NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team held a lead in both ends of a doubleheader against Iona College, but the Gaels rallied to win the two games and completed a sweep of the Stags.
The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, as Kristie Trifiolis started the rally with a one-out double. She went to third on an error by the catcher, and came home on the same play. Fairfield continued to build upon that lead with Cagney Ringnalda's RBI single and Meghan Borst's two-run single to center field.
Iona answered with a runi n the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Laura Stott. The Gaels tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but two of those runs were unearned. Two of the runs came home on a pair of fielder's choice ground outs, while the third crossed the plate following a misplayed grounder.
Fairfield regained the lead in the top half of the fourth when Trifiolis cleared the center field fence with her fifth home run of the seaason. Iona took the lead for the first time with a pair of runs in the sixth inning as an RBI double and an RBI single was the difference.
In the second game, the Gaels used a single, a double, and a ground out to plate a pair of runs in the third inning to secure a 2-0 lead. Fairfield battled back with three runs in the top of the fifth, the key hit coming in the form of a two-run double by Julia Jacoby. Riannon Thomas sent Jacoby home with a first-pitch single to left field.
Iona tied the game in the bottom of the inning as an error allowed the tying run to score. Jessica Stand recaptured the lead for the Stags with a solo home run, but a run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings provided the Gaels with the winning margin.
Fairfield will host Manhattan College on Saturday, May 5 at 1 pm, and will honor seniors Cagney Ringnalda and Kate Roberts during the doubleheader.
