Game One Box Score Game Two Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Senior Kate Roberts tossed a complete game in the second game of a doubleheader against Manhattan, as the Stags swept the Lady Jaspers by 12-7 and 4-1 scores. Kristie Trifiolis hit a home run in the opening game, while Dani Griswold cleared the fence in the nightcap as the Fairfield University softball team finished up its season two wins.
In the first game, both teams scored early and often but it was the Stags who ended up with more big innings. Fairfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the first two runs coming off Riannon Thomas' double. Thomas scored after Cagney Ringnalda launched a sacrifice fly to center field. Manhattan cut into the lead with two runs in the second inning, but only one of the runs was earned.
The Stags tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a three-run homer from Trifiolis. The Lady Jaspers answered with three more runs in the top of the third, using a solo home run, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single to make the score 6-5. Fairfield used a four-run third inning to push the lead to 10-5, as Meghan Borst, Breanne Morschauser, and Kristen D'Alessandro added an RBI single in the rally.
Head Coach Julie Brzezinski made a pitching change to start the fourth inning, bringing in Jen Gilbert for Ringnalda. Gilbert retired the side in order, the first of four successful innings for the freshman. Fairfield closed its scoring with a single run in the fourth and fifth innings. Gilbert yielded two runs in the sixth inning, but did not allow any further damage to earn the win.
In the second game, Roberts retired the first six batters she faced and kept the Manhattan hitters off balance until the Lady Jaspers put together a double and a single in the fourth inning to grab a 1-0 lead. That advantage stood until the Stags plated four runs in the sixth inning, with Erin Frank driving a two-run double to send home the tying and go-ahead runs.
Roberts scattered six hits, struck out two hitters, and walked just one batter in seven innings of work.
