FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team earned the number two spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) pre-season coaches poll, trailing only Canisius College. The Stags garnered 66 points in the poll, 10 points behind the Golden Griffs. The poll was based upon the vote of the 10 MAAC coaches.
Marist College placed third with 65 points, followed by Rider University (41 points), Iona College (39 points), Siena College (38 points), Niagara University (35 points), Manhattan College (25 points), and Saint Peter's College (20 points).
Three Fairfield student athletes were also honored in the pre-season release, as infielder Erin Frank (Scottsdale, Ariz.), outfielder Julia Jacoby (San Diego, Calif.), and utility player Cagney Ringnalda (Dayton, Ore.) received recognition from the conference's coaches.
Frank set the school record for home runs in a season with 10 homers last year, and registered 45 RBI and a .394 batting average. Jacoby ranked second on the team with a .332 batting average and tallied 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts. Ringnalda contributed both as a pitcher and as hitter, recording team-highs with 15 wins and 103 strikeouts. She also batted .280 with three home runs and 22 RBI.
The Fairfield softball team opens the 2007 season on March 2 when it travels south for the Tar Heel Invitational. The Stags will battle Rutgers University in the first game of the tournament.
