FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Molly Harris stroked two hits in both ends of the doubleheader against Providence College, as the softball team dropped the first game of the twinbill by an 8-3 count and tied the second contest at 2-2. The game was called due to darkness after 10 innings.
Providence scored two runs in the first inning and added another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead in the first game. The Friars added two more runs in the fifth frame, before the Stags finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Breanne Morschauser sent home the first Fairfield run with a double to left center field. Morschauser came around to score when Julia Jacoby grounded to the right side of the infield.
The visiting team put the game out of reach with three more runs in the toip of the sixth innig, making the score 8-2. The Stags ended the scoring when Shannon Logan ripped a one-out home run over the left field fence. Tara Hansen pitched the first five innings of the game, surrending 10 hits and three earned runs. Kate Roberts came in relief of the senior and allosed four hits in two innings of relief.
The second game started with a Providence run in the top of the fourth inning when Michelle Bowers' swinging bunt hugged the first base line and stayed fair to allow Gina Rossi to score from third base. Fairfield tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Cagney Ringnalda doubled and came home on Harris' RBI single. The Stags took their first lead of the day when Erin Frank led off the sixth inning with a solo home run that hit the top of the center field fence and then bounced over.
Providence tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Sam Pittman singled through the right side of the infield. Rachel Bartholomew came up next and laced a double off the left field fence to put runners on second and third. Pittman raced home to tie the score on a wild pitch. Ringnalda and Jennifer Maccio locked in a battle from that point as neither pitcher allowed a run over the final four innings of play. Ringnalda fanned seven hitters and allowed nine hits in her 10 innings of work, while Maccio yielded eight hits and had two strikeouts in her 10 innings.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, April 15 when it hosts Iona College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game time is slated for noon.
