FAIRFIELD, Conn. - For the 10th consecutive season, the Fairfield University softball earned a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament by finishing among the top four in the regular-season standings. The Stags secured the number four seed with an 8-8 MAAC mark, and enter the tournament as the conference's co-leader with 30 overall victories. The double-elimination tournament takes place from May 12-14 at DeLuca Field in Stratford.
Fairfield University joins top-seeded Canisius College (28-23 overall, 13-3 MAAC), second-seeded Marist College (30-11 overall, 12-4 MAAC), and third-seeded Rider University (23-26 overall, 10-6 MAAC) in the tournament field. All four teams will be in action on Friday, with Marist playing Rider at 1 pm and Fairfield battling Canisius at 3 pm.
The Stags posted 30 wins in a season for the third time in nine years under head coach Julie Brzezinski. The team advanced to the MAAC tournament in each of Brzezinski's nine seasons at the helm. Erin Frank places atop most of the team's offensive categories, which includes a school-record 10 home runs and 43 RBI. Her .397 batting average places her fifth in the MAAC. Julia Jacoby, one of four Fairfield players to start every game, recorded 66 base hits in 56 appearances. Cagney Ringnalda (13-5 overall, 2.66 ERA), Kate Roberts (4-4 overall, 2.70 ERA), Tara Hansen (7-12 overall, 3.60 ERA), and Tracy Sylvestre (6-6 overall, 3.97 ERA) have anchored the Stags pitching staff this year.
The Golden Griffs captured the MAAC regular-season title for the first time since the 2001 campaign, and posted 28 wins overall which is the most since the 2002 season. Katie Miranto leads the team with a .399 batting average, which places fourth overall in the conference. She ranks first among her teammates with 21 extra base hits, which includes a team-high 13 doubles and four triples. Jess Martin is the team's top home run hitter, hitting five homers which helped her collect a co-leading 22 RBI. Lindsay Garbacz (7-6 overall, 1.66 ERA), Courtney Piar (13-6 overall, 1.98 ERA), and Juliette Bowers (7-7 overall, 2.81 ERA) handle the pitching duties.
The Red Foxes secured second place in the standings after posting four sweeps and four splits against conference foes during the regular season. Chrystine McHugh brings a .412 hitting percentage into the tournament, which is good enough for third place among the MAAC leaders. She also leads the team with 15 home runs, accounting for nearly one-third of the team's 46 homers. Jessica Green is the team's top run producer with 43 RBI, placing second to McHugh with nine home runs. Megan Rigos owns a 19-5 overall record and a 0.94 ERA, followed by Caitlin Carpentier's 8-3 mark and 2.30 ERA.
The Broncs secured the third-seed by winning eight straight conference games over a one-week period. Jen Cullen ranks as the squad's top hitter with a .373 batting average, stroking a team-best 63 hits. Tiffany Day-Neutill (.340 batting average) is the only other regular in lineup with a .300-plus hitting percentage. Desiree Harbaugh has hit a team-high five home runs, and joins Jamie Farley as the co-leader with 20 RBI. Heather Beintema has appeared in 30 of the team's 49 games this year, which has helped her post a 16-10 overall record with a 2.10 ERA. Lauren Brunner (3-7 overall, 4.42 ERA), and Laci Landrum (3-7 overall, 5.51 ERA) are also regulars in the pitching circle.
