
Stags Open Season with Solid Day at Doubles Festival

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team opened its 2007-08 campaign with a strong performance at the Fairfield Doubles Festival at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
In Flight One, the duo of sophomore Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) and Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) advanced to the semifinals where they fell to Quinnipiac's Mary Wilson and Adrienne Markinson, 8-3. Earlier in the day, Postupack and Rys defeated Dara Hawkins-Hodgson and Avery Gibson of Providence, 8-6, and Megan Moran and Kristen Meahl of Holy Corrs, 8-5.
In Flight Two, Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) and freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) also advanced to the semifinals. The pair was overtaken by Quinnipiac's Amanda Petruzzi and Jackie Herb, 8-3, in that round. In previous rounds, Cerrone and Rys defeated Kim Betzner and Jen Cusack of Providence, 8-3, and Ivette Knopka and Paige Brown of Holy Cross, 8-2.
In Flight Three, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Gabriela Davila (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) were defeated by UConn, 8-0, in the opening match. Davila also teamed up with Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) against Providence's Amy McDewitt and Erin Senah but fell, 8-4.
UConn captured Flights Two and Three while Quinnipiac was victorious in Flight One.
Fairfield returns to action Sept. 14-15 at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
