Stags Compete at Hofstra Invitational

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The women's tennis team had a tough outing at the Hofstra Invitational on Saturday as they faced teams from Radford and Amherst as well as the host Pride.

Sophomore Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) opened play in Flight Two with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Camila Noldin. Postupack could not get by Christie Gattelaro of Hofstra, falling 7-5, 6-3.

In Flight One, sophomore Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) suffered a pair of tough losses. She was edged by Radford's Ivana Tomaic, 6-3, 6-1. She then fell to Hofstra's Zoe Taylor, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to Paige Lindsley of Radford, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight Three. She also was defeated by Hofstra's Lauren Clifton, 6-0, 6-2. In Flight Four, Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) fell to Radford's Mirna Matic, 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round. Cerrone then fell to Hofstra's Stacey Kent, 6-2, 6-0.

Junior Gabriela Davila (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) battled against Radford's Ashton Davis but was edged, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, in Flight Five. Davila picked up a first set win against Hofstra's Morganne Downing, but the match was not finished. In Flight Six, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) fell to Radford's Cassandra Price, 6-1, 6-0. Price was leading Samantha Sharifi of Hofstra, 6-4, 2-1, before the match was called.

In Flight Seven, Courtney Taylor (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was swept by Radford's Antonietta Iosue, 6-1, 6-1, and Hofstra's Valerie McDonald, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) also dropped a pair of matches. Amberg was downed by Ally Spector of Radford, 6-2, 6-1, and lost by default to Kristina Middlemiss of Hofstra.

In doubles play, Rys and Postupack split their Flight One matches, earning an 8-4 victory against Gattelaro and Sharifi before falling to Alicia Menezes and Brittany Berckes of Amherst, 8-4.

In Flight Two, Davila and Ruiz fell to Kent and Taylor, 8-3, in the opening round. The Fairfield pair then fell to Natasha Brown and Jill Wexler of Amherst, 8-1. In Flight Three, the duo of Amberg and Cerrone fell to Clifton and McDonald, 8-6, and to Jennifer Murphy and Laura Stein of Amherst, 8-0. In Flight Four, Price and Taylor lost a pair of matches to Downing and Middlemiss, 8-4, and to Amherst's Carlissa King and Anuja Ankola, 8-1.
