
Women's Tennis Has Strong Effort at New England Championships

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield women's tennis team enjoyed a successful opening day at the New England Championships as three Stags will participate in tomorrow's singles finals.
In Flight One, second-seeded Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) advanced to tomorrow's final with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Hartford's Raquel Casino. Rys began the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Stonehill's Lauren Rowinski.
In Flight Two, top-seeded Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Jen Cusack of Providence. Postupack knocked off Hartford's Kasey Michels, 6-2, 6-0.
In Flight Three, second-seeded Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) qualified for the finals by edging out Ivette Konopka of Holy Cross, 6-3, 6-4. Cerrone posted a 6-1, 6-4 against Merrimack's Jessica Lamb in the opening round.
In Flight Six, Gretchen Amberg (Bay Shore, N.Y.) fell in the semifinals to Holy Cross' Kathryn Wilie, 7-5, 6-3. Amberg began the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Allison London of Merrimack.
In Flight Four, freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to Dara Hawkins-Hodgson of Providence, 7-5, 6-3. Ruiz then defeated Merrimack's Elise Dufour, 6-0, 6-0 and will play in tomorrow's fifth-place match. In Flight Five, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) also suffered a first round loss, falling, 6-2, 6-2, to second-seeded Jessica Schnell of Sacred Heart. Price came back to defeat Merrimack's Nora Cahill, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the fifth-place match.
In doubles, the top-seeded duo of Postupack and Rys won their opening round match against Sacred Heart's Demers and Betz, 8-4, in Flight One. In Flight Two of doubles, the second-seeded pair of Cerrone and Ruiz knocked of Holy Cross' Lange and Brown, 8-2. In Flight Three doubles, Amberg and Price cruised by Holy Cross' Fitzsimmons and Manahan, 8-1.
