
Two Stags Advances to Semis of Pepsi Challenge

LAFAYETTE, La. - Sophomore Gretchen Amberg and freshman Alyssa Ruiz advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights at the Louisiana-Lafayette Pepsi Challenge.
In Blue Singles, Amberg defeated Sourthern Arkansas' Rachel Vinsant, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round. She followed that up by downing Grambling State's Faith Williams, 6-1, 6-0.
In Gray Singles, Ruiz shutdown Grambling's Patricia Gallegos, 6-0, 6-3. Ruiz then came back from a first set loss to defeated Louisiana-Monroe's Elodie Burlet, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
In White Singles, Michaela Cerrone and Gabriela Davila both won their first round matches but fell in the quarterfinals. Cerrone defeated Melanie Davis of Grambling, 6-0, 6-2, before falling to Lousiana-Lafayette's Marina Ruiz de Gauna, 6-0, 6-3. Davila defeated Centenary's Kayleigh Sullivan, 6-1, 6-0, but fell to Louisiana-Monroe's Sharon Makhnga, 6-2, 6-2.
Also in Gray Singles, Courtney Taylor fell to Louisiana-Monroe's Ana Burjali, 6-0, 6-0 but defeated Grambling's Aeria Williams, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, to stay alive in the consolation bracket.
Senior Courtney Price fell to Megan Harless of Texas A&M-Corpus Christie by a score of 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round of Blue Singles. She picked up a win in the consolation bracket by defeating Centenary's Gretchen Ashley, 6-3, 6-2.
In Red Singles, both Dana Postupack and Paulina Rys were eliminated. Postupack fell to Northwestern State's Katherine Lange, 6-1, 6-2, and to Alcorn's Swenjna Devoraj, 6-1, 6-2. Rys lost to Meri Gol of McNeese State, 6-0, 6-0, and to Texas A&M-Corpus Christie's Erika Irirate, 6-1, 6-2.
In White Doubles, Fairfield had two pairs advance. The duo of Davila and Ruiz earned a victory over Visant and Bhalla of Sourthern Arkansas while Price and Taylor defeated Centenary's Myers and Buchannan, 8-3.
In Red Doubles, Postupack and Rys fell to Patzer and Colic of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-3, while Cerrone and Amberg fell to Mazinvoa and Molenveld of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-1.
Fairfield will continue action at the Pepsi Challenge on Saturday.
