Sacred Heart Edges Women's Tennis 4-3

STAMFORD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team was edged by Sacred Heart, 4-3, in a battle Friday night at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club.

In one of the most interesting match-ups of the night, Fairfield (1-2) senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) took on her twin sister, SHU (4-1) senior Brittany, in an epic battle at No. 6 singles. It was the first time the two had faced each other in a collegiate dual. Courtney took the first set, 6-3, but Brittany came back to take the second set 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, Courtney prevailed, edging her sister, 12-10.

Sophomore Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) had a solid night, winning both of her matches. At No. 2 singles, she defeated Nicole Betz, 7-5, 6-4 and teamed up with classmate Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles for the 8-7(4) win against Betz and Darcy Demers.

The doubles win by Postupack and Rys was one of three on the night as Fairfield swept the point. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) and freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) knocked off Julianne Kasinow and Ashley Amalfe, 8-3. At third doubles, Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) and Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) picked up the 8-1 victory against Mandy Finkelstein and Jessica Schnell.

In the other singles, matches, Rys fell to Kasinow, 7-5, 6-2 at the top spot while Demers defeated Ruiz, 6-2, 6-3, at the third spot. At No. 4 singles, SHU's Elizabeth Harrington defeated sophomore Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.), 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Caitlyn Savoy (Winchester, Mass.) could not overtake Schnell, falling 6-2, 6-0.

Fairfield is off until February 24 when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson in a 3pm match at Stamford Indoor.
