Florida Gulf Coast Tops Women's Tennis 5-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. - In its Spring Break opener, the Fairfield University women's tennis team was edged by Florida Gulf Coast University, 5-2, this afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Stags fall to 1-4 while the Eagles improve to 3-5.

Sophomore Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) was victorious at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win against Lauren Pfeiffer.

At No. 3 singles, sophomore Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) notched her ninth win of the season with a 6-4, 7-6(8) decision against Leah Johnson.

At No. 5 singles, sophomore Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) played well for the Stags but was narrowly defeated by Joanne Power, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to Maria Maggiorini, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles while sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) was stopped by Brett Kinley, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. At the sixth spot, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) fell to Maggie Caulk, 6-3, 6-0.

The Eagles swept the doubles point from the Stags. At No. 1 doubles, Postupack and Rys were defeated by Maria Braniecka and Jordan Vaughn, 8-4. Cerrone and Ruiz fell to Maggiorini and Pfeiffer, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles, while Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) and Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) were topped by Kinley and Johnson, 8-3.

Fairfield takes on Villanova tomorrow, March 4, at 10 a.m. to conclude play in Florida.
