Women's Tennis Nipped By Villanova 4-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team concluded play in Florida with a tough 4-3 loss to Big East foe Villanova. The Stags and the Wildcats split the singles matches, but Villanova was able to take the doubles point for the victory.

In singles play, sophomore Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.), the reigning MAAC Player of the Week, won her third straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Emily Urda at No. 2 singles. Rys also picked up a win in doubles competition as she and partner Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) edged Villanova's Emily Urda and Ashley Reed, 8-6.

At No. 4 singles, sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) outlasted Daniella Phillis for the 7-5, 7-5 win. At the sixth spot, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) earned a three-set win by defeating Katherine Monari, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell at No. 1 singles to Carla Erskine, 6-1, 6-1, while Postupack was defeated by Courtney Reed in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, sophomore Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) fell to Ashley Reed, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, Ruiz and Cerrone were defeated by Phillis and Courtney Reed, 8-3, at the second spot while Gabriela Davila (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) were edged 8-4 by Erskine and Natasha Stone at the third spot.

With the loss, the Stags' skid extended to five matches as Fairfield drops to 1-5 on the year.

Fairfield returns to action on March 18 as it opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play hosting Saint Peter's at 2 p.m. at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
