
Women's Tennis Stopped By Rhode Island 6-1
Apr 3, 2008FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team fought hard against non-conference foe Rhode Island but could not top the Rams, falling 6-1 this afternoon at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
Rhode Island (12-5) began the day by taking the doubles points. At No. 1 doubles, the sophomore duo Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) picked up the Stags' (3-8) only win with an 8-6 victory over Val Chacon and Christen Cadigan. At the second spot, the sophomore tandem of Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) and Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) was edged by Grace Hedstrom and Nyssa Peele, 8-5. At third doubles, Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to Amanda Barletta and Kristen Liu, 8-1.
In singles play, Rys notched the point for the Stags with a quick 6-3, 6-1 victory against Cadigan at No. 2 singles.
Three of the singles matches went to three sets. After Postupack took the first set at No. 1 singles, Peele came back for the 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win. At No. 3 singles, Ruiz battled it out with Hedstrom, but Hedstrom came away the winner, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the super tie-breaker. At No. 4 singles, Cerrone was edged by Chacon, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Amberg fell to Barletta, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) had her three match winning streak snapped in the 6-2, 6-4 loss to Liu at the sixth singles.
Fairfield is back in action this weekend travelling to Niagara on April 5 and Colgate on April 6.
