
Niagara Nips Women's Tennis 4-3

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Fairfield University women's tennis team was edged, 4-3 by a streaking Niagara University squad today in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. With the win, the Purple Eagles moved to 5-0 in the league and 6-9 overall while the Stags fall to 1-2 in the MAAC and 3-9 on the season.
It was a battle for the Stags in the doubles competition, but they were able to capture the point for the early lead. At No. 1 doubles, the sophomore duo of Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) outlasted Kim Roberts and Shella Dargout, 9-7, 8-9, 7-5. The tandem of Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) sealed the point for the Stags with the 8-1 win against Vanja Lakic and Victoria Tiso. At second doubles, sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) and freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) were edged, 8-6, by Raquel Solis and Emma Cunnington.
The Stags fought hard in single play, but Niagara took four of the six matches. The Stags had a win at No. 4 singles as Cerrone came back from a first set loss to defeat Cunnington, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6. At No. 5 singles, Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) blanked Tiso, 6-0, 6-0.
Postupack fell to Solis, 6-1, 7-5, at the top spot while Rys was topped by Dargout, 3-6, 7-5, 5-2, ret. at second singles. At No. 3 singles, Ruiz fell to Lakic, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) was defeated by Roberts, 6-4, 6-2.
Fairfield returns to the courts tomorrow, April 6, at Colgate.
