
Women's Tennis Edges Loyola 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Junior Lauren
Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) was the last one court for the
Stags and managed to outlast the competition to lift the Fairfield
University women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory against Loyola
College this afternoon. With the win, the Stags improve to 5-11
overall and to 3-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)
while the Greyhounds fall to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in the
league.
Bonanno's efforts came in a grueling battle at No. 5 singles. She took the first set from the Greyhounds' Meaghan McKenna, 7-5, but dropped the next set, 6-3. In the final set of the day and with the match on the line, Bonanno rose to the challenge and downed McKenna, 6-2.
The Stags had two additional singles victories at the top spots. At No. 1 singles, Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) downed Cailtlyn Day, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) defeated Kerri Swan, 6-4, 7-5.
Loyola tied the match with three singles victories. At third singles, Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) was stopped by Joy Johnson, 6-3, 6-4. Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) fell to Stephanie Dunn, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 4 singles while senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) fell in three sets to Lauren Cassle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Fairfield began the day by winning the crucial doubles point. At the top spot, Postupack and Rys defeated Swan and Johnson, 8-5. The duo of Ruiz and Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) were able to seal the point for the Stags with an 8-1 victory over Cassle and Andie Keyser-Baker.
The Stags host Rider tomorrow, April 13, in a Senior Day match-up beginning at noon. Fairfield plays its final match of the regular season is on April 15 against Saint Peter's at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The 2008 MAAC Tennis Championships will be held April 18-20 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
