
Women's Tennis Downs Siena 4-1 To Advance To MAAC Semis

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The third-seeded Fairfield University women's tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Siena College, 4-1, this afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Fairfield (8-11) will face No. 2 seed Niagara University tomorrow, April 19, in the semifinals which begin at 11:30 a.m.
The Stags started the day by winning the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the sophomore duo of Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) and Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won their sixth straight match with an 8-1 decision over Sarah Mayer and Lauren Moy. Rys and Postupack improve to 16-11 on the season with the win. At third doubles, freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) and junior Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) notched the point with an 8-0 victory over Lauren Garbade and Dinka Keric to win their fourth straight and improve to 6-1 as a duo.
In singles play, the match was stopped after Fairfield captured the necessary three wins for the overall victory. At No. 2 singles, Rys defeated Karina Davis, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) posted a 6-3, 6-2 decision against Jessica Asselin at No. 4 singles while junior Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) downed Garbade, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Ruiz was leading Moy, 7-5, 4-1, at No. 3 singles while senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) was leading Keric, 6-3, 5-2, at No. 6 singles when the match was stopped.
The Saints' lone point came at No. 1 singles as Mayer edged Postupack, 6-3, 6-4, snapping Postupack's six-match winning streak. Siena's double duo of Davis and Asselin recorded an 8-6 win over Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) at No. 2 doubles.
Five Stags were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Price, Bonanno, and Voloshin earned their second consecutive accolades while Postupack and Gabriela Davila (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) received their first selections. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
