Women's Tennis Upsets Niagara 4-1 to Advance to MAAC Final

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The third-seeded Fairfield University women's tennis team upset second-seeded Niagara University, 4-1, this afternoon to advance to the finals of the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. 

Fairfield (9-11), winners of six straight, will face No. 1 seed Marist tomorrow, April 20, in the finals which begin at noon. The Stags return to the MAAC Championship final for the first time since the 2003-04 season, the year they captured the league crown. 

The Stags started the day by winning the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the sophomore duo of Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) and Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won their seventh straight match with an 8-0 decision over Shella Dargout and Kim Roberts. Rys and Postupack improve to 17-11 on the season with the win. At third doubles, freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) and junior Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) notched the point with an 8-3 victory over Vanja Lakic and Victoria Tiso.

 In singles play, Postupack defeated Raquel Solis, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Rys downed Dargout, 6-1, 6-2 at the second spot. The Stags wrapped up the victory at No. 4 singles as sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) posted a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Emma Cunnington. 

Two singles matches were underway when play ended. Junior Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) was leading Tiso, 6-4, 5-1 at No. 5 singles while senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) was battling it out with Roberts, 5-7, 3-2.
