Women's Tennis Falls To Marist in MAAC Championship Final

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The third-seeded Fairfield University women's tennis could not overtake top-seeded Marist College this afternoon falling 7-0 in finals of the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Red Foxes, who have now captured back-to-back titles, snapped the Stags six-match winning streak and their quest for a conference crown. 

Fairfield (9-12) advanced to today's final round for the first time since the 2003-04 season, the year they captured the league title. 

Appearing in the final contest of her career, senior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) suffered a tough 6-3, 6-2 loss to Emily Zampello at No. 6 singles. Price finishes the season with a 12-17 overall singles record and a 5-8 mark in doubles. For her career, she has 43 combined wins in three seasons. 

At No. 1 singles, sophomore Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) fell to Christine Ong, 7-5, 6-0. Postupack finishes as Fairfield's wins leader with a 17-15 singles record and 18-14 mark in doubles play. At No. 2 singles, Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) fell to Erin Godly, 6-1, 6-1 to finish the year with a 14-14 record. In doubles play, she is 17-12. As a doubles pair, Rys and Postupack forged an impressive 17-12 record at the top spot. 

Freshman Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) was topped by Cassie Strange, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles. Ruiz finishes her rookie campaign with an 8-21 singles record. At No. 4 singles, sophomore Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) fell to Alexa Strange, 6-0, 6-3. Cerrone finishes the year with a 13-16 singles record. At No. 5 singles, Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) was edged by Mirelva Colon, 6-3, 6-4. Bonanno, after missing most of the spring due to injury, posted a 5-3 singles record and was instrumental in the Stags' winning streak. 

In doubles play, the Stags' only win of the day came at the second spot as Cerrone teamed with Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) to defeat Ong and C. Strange, 8-6. At No. 1 doubles, Godly and A. Strange edged Postupack and Rys, 8-6. At No. 3 doubles, the duo of Ruiz and junior Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) fell to Fouche and Colon, 8-3.
