
Women's Tennis Falls to Seventh-Seeded USC 4-0 in NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES - The Fairfield University women's tennis team saw its 2009 campaign come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this afternoon as the Stags fell to seventh-seeded University of Southern California, 4-0. Fairfield, the reigning MAAC Champions, finish the season with a 16-5 overall record.
Playing in the final doubles match of her career, senior Marisa Voloshin (Woodbridge, Conn.) with partner Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) fell to #78 Alison Ramos and Maria Sanchez, 8-1. The Women of Troy sealed the doubles point at the top spot as #62 Sarah Fansler and Lyndsay Kintsler topped junior Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and freshman Kristen Liu (Closter, N.J.), 8-0. At the third spot as juniors Michaela Cerrone (North Scituate, R.I.) and Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) were trailing Cristala Andrews and Amanda Fink, 6-1, when play was suspended.
In singles play, the Stags fought hard against the Women of Troy (21-2) but could not overtake the nationally ranked squad.
At second singles, Rys, the MAAC Co-Player of the Year, took the first game from 22nd-ranked Fink, but fell 6-1, 6-0. The loss snapped Rys' 16-match winning streak as she finishes with a 24-9 singles record.
At the third spot, Liu fell to #42 Fansler, 6-0, 6-0 to finish with a 19-13 record. At the fourth spot, sophomore Alyssa Ruiz (Glen Head, N.Y.) fell to #68 Ramos, 6-0, 6-0. Ruiz finishes the year with a 19-12 overall record.
Three matches were suspended after USC reached the four-point mark. Postupack was trailing Sanchez, 6-1, 5-1, at the top spot while Cerrone was trailing Leyla Entekhabi, 6-0, 4-1, at fifth singles. At sixth singles, Amberg was down a set, 6-1, and tied in the second set 2-2 when play ended.
