SIMSBURY, Conn. -- The Fairfield women's tennis team made a statement in its spring opener, downing Hartford, 7-0, this afternoon at the Simsbury Tennis House. The Stags did not drop a single match on the day.
The Stags got things underway taking all three doubles matches. The freshman duo of Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y./John A. Coleman) and Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y./The Kew Forest School) defeated Stephanie Schnobel and Kasey Michels, 8-1, at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, senior Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa./The Hill School) and freshman Michaela Cerrone (North Scituate, R.I./Mt. St. Charles Academy) earned an 8-3 victory against Racquel Casino and Liz Weiner. Rounding out doubles play was the sophomore tandem of Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico) and Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen's) which defeated Jessica Ruggles and Michelle Tafur, 8-0.
At No. 1 singles, Rys downed Schnobel, 6-0, 6-2 while Bonanno edged Casino, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. At third singles, Postupack blanked Michels, 6-0, 6-0 while Cerrone earned the 6-0, 6-1 victory against Weinter at fourth singles.
With the match in hand, Accomando posted an 8-2 victory against Ruggles at No. 5 singles while freshman Courtney Taylor (Bay Shore, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) posted an 8-1 win against Tafur.
Fairfield returns to the courts on February 10 when the Stags face Holy Cross in Stamford, Conn. at 7p.m.
