HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Fairfield women's tennis team returned to its winning ways this afternoon defeating Hofstra, 5-2, in a hard-fought battle. With the victory, the Stags improve to 6-4 while the Pride drops to 0-7 on the year.
The Stags opened the day by taking the doubles point with victories in two of the three matches. At No. 2 doubles, the duo of senior Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa.) and sophomore Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) notched an 8-2 win against Tracy Ferrar and Valeria McDonald. At No. 3 doubles, junior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico) earned an 8-1 decision over Hannah Zuckerman and Jen Siegel.
Hofstra took the first two singles matches as Lara Crouch edged freshman Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.), 7-5, 5-7, 7-3, at the top spot while Stacey Kent defeated Bonanno, 6-4, 7-6(0), at No. 2 singles.
The remainder of the victories belonged to Fairfield. At No. 3 singles, Accomando edged out McDonald, 7-6(5), 6-4. At No. 4 singles, Davila bounced back from a first set loss to defeat Ferrar, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. At fifth singles, freshman Courtney Taylor (Bay Shore, N.Y.) won her fifth singles match of the year by pulling out the 7-6(2), 5-7, 10-8, victory over Lauren Moeller. At No. 6 singles, Price made quick work of Siegel, downing her 6-1, 6-1.
Fairfield will open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play tomorrow when it travels to Saint Peter's for a 3:30 p.m. start.
