STORRS, Conn. -- The Fairfield women's tennis team fought hard against the University of Connecticut but could not overtake the Huskies, falling 7-0 this afternoon. With the loss the Stags fall to 7-5 while the Huskies improve to 6-7.
At No. 1 singles, freshman Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) fell to Christina Burek, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, by Kelley LoRusso. At the third spot, senior Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa.) was edged, 6-2, 6-4, by Jess Porter.
Sophomore Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico) fell at No. 4 singles to Breann Cheung, 6-0, 6-3, while junior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) fell to Alli Campitiello, 6-1, 6-1, at the fifth spot. At No. 6 singles, freshman Gretchen Amberg (Manasquan, N.J.) fell to Ashley Petruzzi, 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles competition, Dibbs and Burek defeated the duo of Rys and Courtney Taylor (Bay Shore, N.Y.), 8-2 at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, LoRusso and Campitiello beat out Accomando and Bonanno, 8-3. At third doubles, Porter and Cheung shutout Davila and Price, 8-0.
Fairfield will host a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matches this weekend. Niagara visits on March 31 at noon while Siena heads to the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts on April 1 at noon on Senior Day.
