FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University women's tennis team was edged by Siena College, 4-3, in the opening round of the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The third-seeded Saints started the match by taking the doubles point from the sixth-seeded Stags. Sugam Sanger and Taylor Barvoets defeated Alexis Accomando (Lilitz, Pa.) and Michaela Cerrone (N. Scituate, R.I.) by a score of 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Julia Lebedev and Arti Iyer edged Lauren Bonanno (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Gabriela Davila (Guaybano, Puerto Rico), 8-4.

At No. 3 singles, rookie Dana Postupack (Kingston, N.Y.) defeated Karina Davis, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Davila battled Iyer for the 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 win. At No. 6 singles, junior Courtney Price (Meriden, Conn.) defeated Molly Scullin, 6-2, 6-1.

At the spot, freshman Paulina Rys (Forest Hills, N.Y.) fell to Sarah Mayer, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, while Bonanno was downed by Barvoets, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The Saints sealed up the match at No. 4 singles as Lebedev defeated Accomando, 6-3, 6-0.

Fairfield will face seventh-seeded Rider in tomorrow's consolation round beginning at 9 a.m.
